Brachypelma smithi ( Mexican Red knee)

Appearance: Dark brown/black body with distinctive orange-red leg joints (knees) and tan carapace.

Size: Large, reaching about 5-6 inches leg span.

Temperament: Generally docile, calm, and slow-moving; prefers to flee or flick hairs before biting.

Venom: Potent enough for prey but mild to humans, causing pain similar to a bee or wasp sting.

Habitat & Behavior

Origin: Central Pacific coast of Mexico in arid scrublands, dry forests, and deserts.

Lifestyle: Terrestrial ambush predators, living in burrows under rocks or vegetation.

Activity: Nocturnal hunters.

Life Cycle & Diet

Lifespan: Females live 25-30 years; males typically 5-10 years, maturing much slower.

Reproduction: Females lay hundreds of eggs in silk sacs; males seek females in late summer/fall.

Diet: Carnivores eating insects, small frogs, lizards, and mice.
