(Chicobolus spinigerus) are incredibly popular among invertebrate enthusiasts.

Native to the southeastern

US, they are known for their striking cream-and-

black striped bodies and are widely considered

the best beginner pet millipedes

Size: Grow to about 3.5 to 4 inches in length.

Lifespan: Can live for 5 to 10 years with proper care.

Speed: Not actually fast; they are slow, gentle cruisers that lumber along the forest floor.

Behavior: Highly surface-active, meaning they spend more time wandering out in the open than many other millipede species.

Diet: Detritivores that primarily eat decaying organic matter (leaf litter and rotting hardwood). They also appreciate supplemental vegetables, fruits, and a calcium source.
